Europe is changing its energy supply and is working on an energy transition. Due to governmental plans, a lot of wind and solar PV energy will penetrate the electrical grid. The grid penetration of renewable energy will result in a fluctuating energy price and a growing need for reserve capacity. This literature study will look into the possibilities of power conversion providing national reserve capacity. Balancing capacity can be of value for companies in need of process energy, e.g. heat. The balancing capacity can raise company profits and improve grid stability in the energy transition. This literature study is fundamental knowledge for further research towards using an electric boiler in a steam production set.
