Systems Engineering in maintenance of groundwork, road and hydraulic engineering
MSc thesis topic: An approach for Systems Engineering in the pursuit
of sustainable operation in the maintenance phase for groundwork,
road and hydraulic engineering
The world is currently struggling with the effects of climate change and there is a great demand for
ways to operate sustainable. During its lifetime, a structure runs through multiple phases. Like other
phases, the maintenance phase needs to become more sustainable. Dutch companies for groundwork,
road and hydraulic engineering (GWW) make use of Systems Engineering (SE) as a method for
developing, realizing and managing projects in a structured manner. However, there may be an
opportunity to integrate SE in such a way so that a strengthened new approach can be introduced that
contributes to sustainable operation during the maintenance phase.
In this thesis project it will be investigated if, how and to what degree the integration of SE is a threat
for Dutch companies for groundwork, road and hydraulic engineering in the maintenance phase and
how this can support to operate on a sustainable way. We are looking for a student with a combination
of interests in Sustainability and Systems Engineering who will develop methods to assess this issue.
Literature research and field observations will be used. ProcessMinded will supervise the student as
well as help to acquire suitable stakeholders to this research.
